ABSTRACT
Toxic politics has been with us almost from the start of the Republic. It was particularly intense in the new nation's third and fourth presidential campaigns after the revered George Washington was elected twice without an opposing candidate. But in the competitive elections of 1796 and 1800, politics became incendiary and vicious, setting a pattern of the presidents often playing a lead role in emphasizing toxic politics.
