ABSTRACT
Several presidents resisted playing negative politics. They showed that staying above the fray won’t automatically cost a candidate the White House. They included Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Barack Obama. Each was willing to defend himself and occasionally singe an opponent, but their approaches were positive overall, and they avoided toxic politics as much as possible.
