ABSTRACT

Capital has always been mobile; land and labor depend more on rapid transportation — and that Western speciality, the multinational corporation, is a form of organization that facilitates tremendously the mobility of all three factors. Trade statistics between the two parts of Europe show convincingly the colonial structure of the trade composition: raw materials one way, manufactured goods the other way; and also that the EC countries have an even more colonial structure in their trade composition with Eastern Europe than does the rest of Western Europe. Unlike the other major competitor to the West, Japan, the socialist countries seem to be systematically trying to compete with the West where West is stronger. The existence in Europe of socialist countries that are innovative and permit a great deal of individual self-expression might have considerable influence on such border states as Finland, Austria, perhaps even Switzerland.
