ABSTRACT

The major uniqueness of literature on women with disabilities lies in its diversity, which appears to extend across various disciplines and politics, and is often interdisciplinary in nature. Disability can have a profound impact on an individual’s ability to carry out traditionally expected gender roles, particularly for women. N. Daruwalla et al. in their study on Violence against Women with Disability in Mumbai also found evidence of lack of acceptance by families, emotional violence, exclusion and vulnerability. There are significant barriers to the disclosure of sexual assault by people with a disability and more especially for women with disabilities. The dual stigmatization of being a woman as well as being disabled pervades the field of employment for women with disabilities. It is important to bear in mind that the rights of women with disabilities should become a prime feature in the mainstream women’s movement.
