ABSTRACT

In the last war the more permanent units in the far rear usually regarded it as their main function to harass, ambush and raid rather than fight the enemy. A Special Force in the far rear, like partisans, should therefore primarily harass and not fight, and the same applies to regular forces which might possibly replace it in the future. It also applies to small forces because they are only equipped to harass. The far rear is therefore a harassing zone for the more permanent forces stationed there. These forces—including also the Special Air Service, Independent Companies, Special Force with Partisans and Brandenburg-type formations—all therefore make their contribution to the defeat of the enemy by containing his troops, knocking out centres of production, interfering with transport and supply routes, ambushing and raiding, undermining enemy morale, kidnapping enemy leaders, disseminating propaganda, waging political and economic warfare, indicating targets and supplying intelligence.
