ABSTRACT

Rotha Serey lived his entire life in Preah Go (he passed away in 2016) and received his education in a traditional Buddhist pagoda during the final years of French Colonialism. His life story reveals the history of education, providing a long-term perspective on the iterations of development that comprise contemporary Cambodia. After surviving the Khmer Rouge period, he subsequently married, had children, and eventually grandchildren. From his perspective, educational development has continued to progress over time. It has been mostly positive since the traumatic setbacks of the Khmer Rouge. Educational choice is shown to have had positive social impacts.
