ABSTRACT

In this chapter we explore ‘first relationships’ and how these can influence and sometimes disrupt sexual development, causing sexual problems later in life. Through case studies, we see the impact that peer pressure has on Celine, leaving her isolated and questioning, ‘Am I normal?’ We illustrate how previously buried memories of childhood experiences impacted on Amanda’s and Ben’s intimate life. We go on to explore sexual trauma through sexual abuse and childhood exploitation. Through Linda and Elsie, we discover their recently triggered memories of childhood sexual trauma and the surfacing of powerful feelings. With Jade, Jaz and Chloe we learn how vulnerable and unaware young people are to the risks of sexual exploitation and how their understandable denial can prevent them getting help. Finally, we meet Furah and Dr Tanous, who were both subjected to female genital mutilation as children and were both considering pregnancy in the future, but their needs were very different.
