Chapter 1 introduces readers to telehealth, telepsychology, and associated terminology that are used in the field and throughout the book. The chapter begins with a discussion of historical variability in the terminology of “telehealth,” detailing the overlapping nature of numerous terms used to describe the integration of technology with clinical services. A contemporary definition of telehealth is provided before telepsychology is introduced as a specialized type of telehealth service. Telepsychology is discussed to allow for numerous clinical services, including interviews and initial diagnostic meetings, psychological and neuropsychological assessments, psychological interventions, data and health-related management among providers, data transmission and monitoring of patients, and professional services.
