ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 has two themes which recur throughout the book: first, that evaluation is a prime driver of text construction and second, that differences in evaluation use among hard news stories, editorials and feature articles are intimately tied to their distinct communicative purposes and rhetorical conventions. Sections 8.2, 8.3 and 8.4 discuss the major findings and contributions of this study, highlighting how differences in evaluation use in the three newspaper genres throw light on genre specificity, textual positions and values inherent or constructed in newspaper texts. In so doing, they help us better understand how evaluation contributes to the construction of the three newspaper genres in significantly various ways. Section 8.5 looks at this study’s pedagogical implications and how some of its findings may be relevant to the teaching of ESL and ESP courses. Section 8.6 revisits some issues such as topic specificity and makes some suggestions for further research. Chapter 8 ends by reiterating that hard news stories, editorials and feature articles are decisively shaped and defined by evaluation.
