ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 argues for a new approach to studying evaluation in newspaper texts. It is in two main parts (Sections 3.2 & 3.3). Section 3.2 considers three existing approaches to evaluation: “appraisal”, “stance” and “a framework for evaluation”. It discusses their features, strengths and limitations. It concludes that they may not be suitable for all studies of newspaper discourse and that it has been necessary to develop a new framework of analysis for analyzing newspaper texts to serve purposes like those of the present study. Section 3.3 describes the new framework, which has five evaluative dimensions and a strong orientation to values in newspaper texts. It explains that such values reflect attitudes and opinions, which can often be expressed through evaluative dimensions. It also provides the rationale behind the framework’s evaluative dimensions (each with two sides) and considers several concomitant issues. Finally, it describes the evaluative dimensions in detail.
