ABSTRACT
This introduction sets out the aims and scope of this book's investigation including a discussion of the appropriateness of the term ‘trope’. It surveys some of the available literature and identifies significant political and social developments that form the background of eighteenth and nineteenth century English literary references to Islam and to Muslims. It outlines the content of subsequent chapters and their core arguments.
