ABSTRACT

This conclusion summarizes each chapter's findings and argues that harmful stereotyping and false representation of Islam today which draw on previous images, tropes and depictions, is problematic and dangerous for the health of an increasingly pluralist USA and of other multireligious societies. It sets this against the background of Samuel P. Huntington's clash of civilizations theory, 9/II, the media's conflation of the words ‘Muslim’ and ‘terrorist,’ fear that Muslims will introduce Islamic Law in the USA, the First Amendment's guarantee of religious freedom and the United Nations’ call for inter-civilizational dialogue. Literature can perpetuate ideas about conflict or challenge these.
