ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces an innovative approach to the oral history of men and women who have participated in different national and local neo-Nazi movements in Sweden. Our book offers an in-depth study of the processes of entering into, participating in, exiting and staying in the neo-Nazi movement. This introductory chapter contextualizes the book and introduces some of the key terms applied to the study of the contemporary neo-Nazi movement. The concept of trajectory, for example, is used to make sense of an individual’s entrance into, involvement in and their decisions to either stay or leave the neo-Nazi movement. We will also introduce a distinction between skinheads and post-skinheads, which will be used to analyze the empirical material. Furthermore, there is an account of previous research and a positioning of our study within this field of research. Finally, there is a description of the empirical material and of the 27 informants of the study. For a closer presentation of the informants, we refer to the Appendix. The Introduction concludes with an outline of the disposition of the book.
