ABSTRACT

Now Available Online – How to Stream is a broad overview of how to approach the streaming industry from an independent producers’ perspective. Getting content to streaming services is a complex process, and a complicated decision. This chapter places streaming platforms, or video-on-demand (VOD) services into tiers: The Biggies, which generally acquire content through distributors and aggregators; The Aggregators, where you pay to get your content on iTunes and others; The Curators that focus on theme or region; and self-publishing platforms that allow you to upload and charge your customers directly. This chapter identifies some of the companies involved in the streaming universe, and how they operate. Based on the currently available information, filmmakers can use this chapter to make educated decisions about which platform(s) may be the right fit for their content.
