ABSTRACT

How do we begin our work together as a group of actors seeking space for collective creativity? Working together “safely, bravely, and with abandon” requires that all involved understand the mutual respect needed to work together. This chapter outlines how to engage with a new group of actors by taking them through a process of inclusion. In this chapter, readers will discover how to create a collective mission as the foundation for group explorations. With the mission established, the chapter then introduces multiple exercises delving into personal awareness, sensorily grounded language, and guided improvised body work, as a practice for the actor to build upon personal freedom and joyful childlike play. It also includes how to create sacred space, the Falling in Love with Your Space Exercise, an introduction with guidance for improvs, an explanation on letting the body lead, accessing soft focus, and the What’s in the Room? Exercise.
