ABSTRACT

Oscillating between personal biography, dream-like descriptions, and diverse archetypes, this chapter examines intersectionality of our dreams, fantasies, and behavior. Fluid archetypes populate this chapter through a case study of a group of Central American teenagers who I worked with to redefine the “hero archetype” and what it means within the context of our shared political climate. This collaboration resulted in a new play produced by the CalArts Center for Performance/Duende CalArts titled Shelter, which was presented in Downtown Los Angeles and the Kennedy Center. Five archetypes for the great actor are outlined and explained in detail: The Lover, The Storyteller, The Trickster, The Shape Shifter, and The Fool.
