ABSTRACT

Throughout this embodied exploration of scene study and character development, I interweave the mythic as a way to expand the emotional aperture of the student. Basic principles of scene study are addressed such as answering the questions: Who am I? Where am I? What do I want? How do I get it? What is my obstacle? In addition the actor is introduced to creative exercises, such as the headline, the Picture Exercise, and stream of consciousness writing, to explore intuition and where the body wants to lead them in their character portrayals. They will utilize their foundation in archetypes, as well as the Detective and Femme Fatale from previous chapters, to dive deeper into finding colors and range. There is a debrief conversation with students detailing actors’ responses to the archetype exercise. The concepts of operative words, POE (point of entry), and identifying the traps will help them in their journey as they seek to enter a new terrain within their performance.
