ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an example of improv work from my acting mentor, George Morrison, and my SUNY Purchase College improv group, Perceptor Theater, whose notable company alumni included Stanley Tucci and Ving Rhames. The four-step guide to spoken improvs includes Mirror, Rebound, Space Rebound, and Scene. In this partner approach, there is no “leader” and no “follower.” The two actors must affirm their partner’s impulses as they move from one phase to the next. This improv encourages the actor to move out of the comfort zone and into the archetypal.
