ABSTRACT

Solo performance offers a transcultural approach to dismantling existing artistic models, replacing them with inner world mythologies yet to be uncovered. The notion of destiny is introduced as one’s personal family heritage becomes a unique prism for creative impulses. From this point of view, the creative individual can begin to confront the fabric of what is eternal. I recount the development of Kalean Ung’s solo piece, Letters From Home, about her Cambodian father, Dr. Chinary Ung, and his family’s flight from the Khmer Rouge/Cambodian Genocide. Prompts for solo performance exploration and strategies include: Itzamná—the Mayan God of Writing, Inviting Your Story to Come Forth, Solo Project Map/Guide, Research and Interviews, among others.
