ABSTRACT

India’s rapid digitisation, especially in government services, is helping to transform its economy. Simultaneously, it is exposed to cyber threats, which will only increase as the economy grows. So far, there have been no major state-sponsored, disruptive cyber attacks; instead, India has been subjected to thousands of smaller attacks and data breaches. The government has responded by making cyber security a policy priority through measures such as the Information Technology Act of 2000 and the National Cyber Security Policy of 2013, among others. This chapter takes a broad overview of India’s cyber security landscape by examining threats to India’s computer networks. It also reviews the major cyber attacks on Indian computer networks since 2010 and their implications. It will then discuss steps taken by the stakeholders - government, regulators and the private sector - to tackle these threats.
