ABSTRACT

The size of the Portuguese population has remained stable since 1985, when the number of ten million inhabitants was first reached. Population has hovered around ten million every year, with only a small dip to 9.9 million from 1990 to 1994. The Codigo do Trabalho states that family members are allowed time off work to grieve. An individual may take up to five consecutive days off work, depending on the familial relation to the deceased. If a person dies in hospital and the body exhibits the appropriate age and health characteristics for organ donation, the hospital will investigate whether the person in question has expressed their opposition. The transportation of dead bodies across international borders follows the 1937 International Convention on the Transport of Corpses, signed into Portuguese law by Decree-Law 417/70, and the 1973 Agreement on the Transfer of Corpses, signed into Portuguese law by Decree 31/79.
