ABSTRACT

The costs of a funeral service depend on a variety of factors. The geographic location can be influential in the sense that, in urban areas, there may be greater purchasing power, which may in turn motivate funeral homes to offer more expensive services with extra features and add-ons; on the other hand, urban areas may have a greater number of funeral homes, which may lead to more competitive pricing. Cremation is generally considered to be an affordable alternative to burial. There are also other fees involved when families choose cremation, and especially when they choose to keep the ashes in the cemetery. In the Lisbon municipal cemeteries, for example, cremation costs 152.85 euros. Pouring the ashes in a cendrarium would cost the family a one-time fee of 52.50 euros.
