ABSTRACT

Creating meaning from within begins with our beliefs, values, and consequent self-identity. None of these beliefs is supported by evidence or facts, but they nonetheless influence behavior and create meaning for many people. The accumulation of values creates meaning, yet we seldom tap into these values formally, let alone change or examine them. There are forces around us which also determine meaning for us. Hypnosis, after all, is real and medically practiced by some therapists to “dig out” hidden meanings harbored in the recesses of our brains. “Meaning” begins to lose its meaning under this barrage of sound and fury. The abdication or loss of the engines for the discovery of meaning have had a huge, deleterious impact on people’s lives, self-worth, and control. There is apparently a “meaning” in that belief system that is too strong to be totally undermined.
