ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a discussion of mobile dating with a special focus on Tinder, the world’s most popular dating app. It explores the nature and implications of sexting, a widely popular form of intimate communication today. Dating apps today are more focused on visuals than dating websites that were previously popular. For instance, on Tinder, people swipe right to show they like the person, or left when they are not interested in that person primarily by looking at their photographs. Digital technology also offers people infinite choice in partners rendering it difficult to stick to one. Facebook gives many former couples awkward moments when it reminds them of friendship anniversaries or shows a picture of a former partner’s current romantic interest in the newsfeed. Female users of dating apps report that it is difficult for many Indian men to respect a woman who is upfront about her sexual desires.
