ABSTRACT

The religion of Islam, and Muslims themselves, have long been discriminated against in British, Italian and Spanish media, which is furthered in media narratives with the use of translation as a media tool. This chapter identifies the extent of Islamophobia in the British, Italian and Spanish media, as well as the dissemination of anti-Islamic narratives and discourse framing Islam and Muslims as the alien “Other.” This chapter also establishes a rise in the presence of Islamophobia and Islamophobic media narratives, with the help of translation, since the events of 9/11.
