ABSTRACT

As a discipline caught up in the maelstrom of late capitalism, it seems every idea and discovery in archaeology has to be new; that the discipline requires constant reinvention. To study intentionality in archaeology requires us to abandon the logic of late capitalism and accept that many of the ideas that have coursed through archaeology should be reconsidered.

This chapter addresses several topics of interest in archaeology today where intentionality can help make our understanding of the past clearer and better. This chapter also explains why intentionality requires archaeology to go beyond the practice of archaeology itself and at the same time, why archaeology needs to return to interpretative practices. Finally, this chapter highlights the importance of finding a way to combine different ideas and methods, that is to say, to synthesize archaeological theory into a coherent whole.
