ABSTRACT

Transport is essential to the functioning of any society. It influences the location and range of productive and leisure activities; it affects the location of residence; it influences the range and provision of goods and services available for consumption. The demand for transport derives from the needs of people to travel from one place to another to carry out activities of their daily lives. The same demographic factors affecting household formation rates are also having an impact on employment in Great Britain. Economics is primarily concerned with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services on which people place a value. Significant as distance is, it does not fully explain the wide range of trip characteristics of everyday life. Changes in the generalized cost of travel can come about in number of ways. Public transport fares can be reduced through subsidy; private motor vehicle costs can be reduced by the introduction of a new facility such as a motorway.
