ABSTRACT
Chapter 10 introduces students to the discipline of geography. It begins with a brief description of physical and cultural geography. Focus then shifts to the five fundamental themes of geography and how these themes might be represented in a series of questions raised about Washington, DC. Students are then offered a conceptual and topical outline of geography as a final, alternative view of what the discipline is all about.
The chapter then turns its attention to what students in grades K-6 should know from the discipline of geography. The National Geography Standards (1993, 2012) are featured, in addition to other documents that prescribe a scope and sequence for geography content and skills. A discussion about connecting map and globe skills with other social studies areas ensues. The next section concerns critical geographic thinking and problem solving.
The final section concerns map and globe skills before the chapter closes with a summary, sample lesson plans, and a listing of resources supporting geographic education.
