ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 begins with a sample dialogue designed to highlight differences of opinion that could occur in a kindergarten classroom. An explanation follows, which is designed to raise students’ consciousness regarding this vital area of social studies.

The chapter then presents some basic reasoning regarding differences of opinion, raising the truth that although everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, all opinions are not equal. Examples are then offered to illustrate this basic truth. The section then concludes with a table that displays differences of opinion represented in everyday life.

It next presents a consideration of why differences of opinion belong in the classroom and guidelines for discussing and resolving differences of opinion. These guidelines are then illustrated with a sample dialogue.

Discussions of controversial issues and the importance of examining emotions follow. These sections emphasize awareness the emotional roots of conflicts and the importance of this knowledge in developing their resolutions.

The chapter concludes with a sample lesson plan and selected readings.
