The limits of self-knowledge

The chapter discusses four novelists, who question both the reality of the self and emphasize its intrinsic subconscious unknowability: Hesse’s Steppenwolf; Golding’s Free Fall and Pincher Martin; Camus’s The Stranger; Conrad’s The Heart of Darkness; and Jung’s “shadow self.”
