ABSTRACT

Readers will learn the step-by-step process of constructing interview-based documentary scenes, including how to “anchor with audio” and the crucial skill of shuffling the order of clips to achieve the best flow of ideas. (An in-depth analysis of a scene from the documentary The Hunting Ground is included.) The chapter discusses the definition and utility of “hinge clips,” as well as how to use cutaway shots to illustrate ideas and achieve a smooth flow for a scene. Specific suggestions are offered on how to smooth audio edits, including how to cut audio asynchronously with picture and how to add “bad” sound in order to improve overall listenability.
