ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explore best practices and key ideas to consider related to effective formative and summative assessment in the context of remote English language arts instruction. In remote teaching and learning, effective assessment takes on a new dimension as we English language arts teachers must determine the formative and assessment processes that best guide teaching and learning while also aligning with the features of remote instruction. This chapter addresses these topics in a variety of ways. First, the authors describe key components of remote English language arts assessment, noting what can make these assessments useful and effective. After that, they consider why it’s so important to assess students in meaningful and authentic ways in remote contexts. Then they look at an example of Jennifer’s assessment-related work with her middle school students. Next, they share recommendations for teachers to consider when assessing student learning remotely. Finally, they discuss how the information described in this chapter can be adapted to fit with a range of modalities.
