ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explore the concept of constructing a strong learning community in the time of remote instruction, which is both a significant challenge and a key aspect of instructional learning success. The information in this chapter provides important information about the features and significance of such a community and conveys useful suggestions to consider when building a strong sense of connection among students during remote instruction. First, the authors explore what it means to build a learning community in the time of remote instruction, highlighting attributes, challenges, and opportunities associated with constructing a strong remote learning community. They then reflect on why doing so is especially important, which we follow with an instructional snapshot section that provides an example of Jennifer’s work with her middle school students. After that, they share key recommendations for teachers to consider when building strong remote learning communities with their students. Finally, the authors discuss how the ideas described in this chapter can be utilized in and adapted for a wide range of modalities.
