ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explore the most effective ways to engage students in literature instruction in remote contexts, identifying important and essential aspects of teaching literature and reflecting on engaging and meaningful ways to apply those instructional principles to remote English language arts instruction. They examine in this chapter key aspects of strong literature instruction and then share insights to consider when remotely engaging your students in these practices. First, they describe key components of strong remote literature instruction, noting major features and challenges associated with it. Then the authors discuss why it’s so important to effectively teach literature in remote contexts, which they follow with an instructional snapshot section that provides an example of Jennifer’s work with her middle school students. Afterward, they share recommendations for teachers to consider when teaching literature remotely. Finally, they discuss how the ideas in this chapter can be implemented in a range of modalities.
