ABSTRACT

While criminal investigation is generally aligned with criminal justice instead of criminology, it is central to crime fiction. This chapter both identifies some general issues regarding investigation in fiction, such as its central position in relation to modern epistemology, and traces the way different forms of investigation have appeared in the genre. Areas of focus include the amateur investigations of classic detective fiction, the private investigators of the hardboiled, and the investigative techniques explored in police procedurals, as well as the important role of forensic science.
