ABSTRACT

Adjustment disorders (Ads) are not uncommon. Chapter 8, “Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood,” discusses the meaning of a stressful event and the way in which individuals with an adjustment disorder with depressed mood process and adapt to a stressful event, and it explains how adjustment disorder with depressed mood is different from major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and persistent depressive disorder. The chapter investigates the symptoms, diagnosis, prevalence, and underpinnings or causes of adjustment disorder with depressed mood, describes the etiology of adjustment disorder, suggests integrated psychotherapy treatment approaches, specifically, for adjustment disorder with depressed mood, and explains how to implement integrated psychotherapy approaches, in practice, for adjustment disorder with depressed mood. A case example that demonstrates how to implement a unified psychotherapy model to treat an individual with an adjustment disorder with a depressed mood is included at the end of the chapter.
