ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses concepts and tools to conduct a risk assessment, which consists of methods that aim at improving our understanding of the risks considered and in this way supporting decision-makers when deciding what actions to take. A risk assessment comprises two main parts: risk analysis and risk evaluation. The risk evaluation is typically conducted by risk analysts. The risk assessment provides input to the decision-makers, who will conduct a management review and judgment and make a decision. There are many ways of categorizing risk assessments. One common classification is to distinguish between quantitative risk assessment, qualitative risk assessments and semi-quantitative risk assessments. Another way of classifying risk assessment is to distinguish between data-driven risk assessment methods and model-based methods. Data and information gathering is partly conducted in the planning phase and partly as an integrated part of the risk analysis.
