ABSTRACT

Some of the people students argue that it may be punishment by presentation of a punisher (the smashed car), but once they realize that the smashed rear end is really just the removal of a reinforcer, intact rear end, they come around and realize it's really a negative punishment contingency. The negative punishment contingency involves a different reinforcer from the one maintaining the penalized behavior. Lynn suggests that time-out is effective, fast, easy to use properly, helps parents and teachers get rid of bad behavior without themselves becoming too angry and upset, improves the relations between the child and the adults, and clears the air for the child to acquire good behavior. Sometimes a negative punishment contingency will have some of the features of response cost combined with some of the features of time-out.
