ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the importance of diversity – for chairs themselves, for members of meetings, Boards, executives and the wider workforce. “The right people” means above all aiming for a true diversity, reflecting a multicultural society and world. A good mix of all genders, younger people, people from different ethnic and social class backgrounds, people with disabilities, people with different sexual preferences. Proper attention to inclusion and diversity has been shown conclusively to improve the financial performance of companies. New Board members from diverse backgrounds may be less self-confident, thus requiring special care and attention. The language of diversity needs to be handled with care. Chairs who consult widely, and not just the usual suspects, and who “walk the talk” of diversity, will be more effective.
