ABSTRACT

This chapter walks educators through the three stages of the Trivium: Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. As each of the stages is explored, educators are presented with specific, evidence-informed instructional practices to utilize during the stage to build an effective learning environment. The practices are derived from cognitive science as well as classical education. After exploring many strategies readers interact with principles of classical pedagogy and how they can be implemented to enhance student understanding. Teachers will be equipped to apply strategies that will help learners build knowledge, to help them apply logical thinking in their subject area, and to express precise and persuasive understanding when they are ready.
