ABSTRACT
Many research institutions were developed to preserve Cantonese opera, for example, Guangdong Province Research Group for the Traditional Arts of Cantonese Opera, the Guangzhou Zhenxing Cantonese Opera Fund and Opera Research Laboratory. These institutions not only provide financing to the development of new repertoire but also evaluate the performance of many existing troupes. They also provide training to the younger generation by developing schools of Cantonese opera in the Guangdong Cantonese Opera School and the Guangzhou Art School. Foshan Youth Cantonese Opera Troupes and Zhanjiang Little Peacock Cantonese Opera Troupe are two influential troupes that nurture new talents. This chapter briefly discusses the modernisation and integration of Cantonese opera and the related issues in tourism development in the GBA.
