ABSTRACT

The introduction to Slow Violence offers a robust presentation of concepts and theories salient to the ideas offered in the book. It briefly discusses the historical context in which the argumentation is situated, sketching the motivations for adopting a new materialist approach to the analyzed processes and phenomena. As well as underlining the urgency of tackling urbicidal violence in its various manifestations, the introduction focuses on the presentation of the notion of “slow urbicide” and setting out its relation to earlier ideas that informed its conceptualization. Finally, it briefly discusses the overall logic of the book while critically approaching concepts such as “ethno-territoriality” and “the right to the city,” around which the subsequent narrative is structured and on which the analysis of “slow urbicidal violence” rests.
