ABSTRACT

Peace is not just the absence of overt violence. This chapter discusses the theoretical question, ‘Why non-violence’. Many politicians and dictators in the last few decades have claimed that they were overthrowing the regime in their countries because they were going to do away with corruption and serve justice. Absence of war alone does not make the world warless. It is only when almost all human beings start believing that they are an integral part of the entire human race and care for each other, that the seeds of a warless world and a non-violent society will spring forth. This century has seen two different kinds of struggles against colonialism and repression. Revolution has not reached the lives of common people. Repressive authoritarianism is restricting the development of the human personality to its fullest in some Socialist countries.
