ABSTRACT

Emotions are sometimes the tip, and sometimes the root of the inner experience informing the patterns at play in our lives. The Five Emotions are more like recurring themes, like the hook of a song, manifesting habitually within us. Shame, envy, grandiosity, and fear are root emotions, while boredom is a tip or mask emotion. For the purpose of illustration, a table of emotional sequences is provided. Mask emotions serve to form a complex barrier to the unconscious beliefs we hold to keep ourselves safe. A client’s fundamental narrative is revealed through their emotional patterns. These narratives result in beliefs that are central to how we operate. To initiate change, we must ask questions that uncover and allow our root emotions to expose the infrastructure of our beliefs. This is how we can allow ourselves or our clients to change, grow, and unblock: Change the belief, and you change the operating system. A series of case studies taking us through each example of an emotional sequence illustrated in the table is provided.
