ABSTRACT

This book is the result of ethnographic research about the Nigerian and Ghanaian women who work in prostitution in the red-light district of the carres in Brussels in 2019. For six months, two researchers took an ethnographic approach to the field, made observations in the area, and conducted interviews with the women. Prostitution is a high-risk activity that exposes women to different forms of violence. Most of the participants do not see Brussels or Belgium as their home, as they spent many years in their first country of arrival in Europe, only moving to Brussels for economic reasons. Building trust with the women is key to the successful outcome of any intervention. Equally, sensitizing initiatives that are directed at the Nigerian and Ghanaian women working in the carres, informing them of the legal and psychosocial consequences of human trafficking of themselves and others, are currently non-existent.
