ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 addresses the vital role of place in the human experience. While there are societal trends at play that make human connection challenging, human-centered design can help bring people together. The presence of third places, and other public places that encourage gathering, provides opportunities to connect with others. Social capital, the exchange of care and concern offered to fellow citizens in connected communities, is positively impacted by spaces where people can get to know one another. The chapter also incorporates the characteristics of third places, which include offering neutral ground, welcoming people from all walks of life, providing a good spot for conversation, accessibility, the presence of regular patrons, having a low profile, providing a playful atmosphere, and feeling like a home away from home.
