ABSTRACT

Part of the attraction of third places begins with the location. Chapter 5 addresses the importance of the surrounding area to the success of coffee shops or cafés. The establishment should be easy to access, and the site should feel safe and convey a welcoming message to patrons. Many communities are seeing a renewed interest in city living or denser suburban living with amenities nearby. While many cities are walkable, suburban areas are seeing clusters of shops and restaurants within neighborhoods, which simulates some of the aspects of city life. People enjoy walkable communities because they enhance their health as well as their opportunities to connect with others. People are drawn to places that feel alive because they want to be part of the action. These are ideal settings for third places and help people from the area get to know one another.
