ABSTRACT

Throughout this book I use the word “coverage,” which I define as the angles used to shoot any scene. When I was in Cancún, Mexico directing a TV movie for the Hallmark Channel, after the first couple days of shooting the producer came rushing over with a worried look. “The studio saw the dailies,” he said, “and you aren't doing enough coverage.” I was so surprised. I was shooting lots of angles for every scene: masters, medium shots, closeups—all the different shots you could ever want to edit with. I scratched my head, wondering how I still wasn't shooting enough coverage. He looked at me, confused. “No, your shots are fine. You aren't covering up the actresses enough in the beach scenes. There's too much skin showing!” Suffice to say, this book is about a very different kind of coverage.
