ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the range of the most pressing issues and crises that we are facing globally. It begins by looking into the ways in which governments around the world responded to the global crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The kind of responses to the threat of the virus can be seen as a metaphor of our current ideological predicament. The main claim advanced in this chapter is that capitalism, as a socio-economic and ideological system, is the fundamental problem which needs to be addressed if we want to seriously confront any of the major global issues and crises, with any realistic prospects for reaching long-term solutions. Dismantling the capitalist system will not automatically resolve all of the world's problems by any means, but without dismantling it, there can be no viable long-term solutions to any of the major global issues.
