ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a framework, along with procedural guidelines, that practitioners can use when coordinating programs and services related to mental skills, life skills, and mental health in a sport organization. First, it sets forth a rationale about the importance of the coordination of these kinds of programs and services, including what is meant by program and service coordination. Second, it delineates the nature and scope of the mental skills area. Third, the chapter offers a description of the life skills domain. Fourth, it positions the area of mental health in relation to mental skills and life skills domains within the context of a sport organization and the quest for the mental and emotional development of athletes. Fifth, it addresses the supervision of mental health programs and services. Sixth, the chapter describes procedural guidelines the practitioner can use so they can implement mental skills, life skills, and mental health programs and services in a coordinated manner, with each area being complementary to and supportive of each other area. The chapter concludes with practitioner exercises.
